Why your support matters
Bill’s Last Summer
Bill* desperately wanted his final few months to be at home. After a lengthy stay in the hospital, he just wanted to spend time with his family sitting outside in the warm summer sun.
VON team members in Belleville, Ontario helped make Bill’s last wish come true by providing special services at home.
A team of VON personal support workers (PSWs) and nurses worked with an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist to build his health and strength so that he was able to get out of bed and relax in his wheelchair comfortably.
“He got in that chair, and he had the biggest smile on his face,” says Jessica Sharpe, RPN Team Lead, VON Home Support Services. “He said, ‘I could stay up here all day.’”
Bill sat in the sun for one last summer, and enjoyed his family, just as he wanted.
