Full circle care: from volunteer to supported client

Antoinetta receiving VON Home Helper

When Antonietta first walked into the VON Sudbury office more than two decades ago, she had a simple goal: to give her time to help others.

“I told them that English was not my first language,” recalls Antonietta. “But I said I would like to start volunteering.”

That conversation marked the beginning of a 24-year relationship with VON, one rooted in service, connection and community.

Antonietta began volunteering at the site, supporting meal preparation, program activities and special events. Over the years, she saw firsthand the difference VON makes in people’s lives.

“I like helping people,” she says. She volunteered consistently up to the COVID-19 pandemic, where she stayed connected with clients through phone calls and virtual activities when in-person programs paused.

Antonietta is also a long-time donor to VON, supporting the organization she believes in so deeply.

As time passed and life shifted, Antonietta required support herself. Now at age 95, her story has come full circle. Antonietta lives independently in her apartment, supported by her family and VON, receiving Home Helper support and peer connection through the Adult Day Program

“My home helper comes and helps me. I have a bad back, so she is a wonderful support,” Antonietta says. For Antonietta, being supported by the same organization she once dedicated her time to is deeply meaningful.

“I encourage people to go to VON for help,” she says. “Because you are a person when you go there, you are not just a client. They treat you with a white glove.”

From giving her time to receiving the same compassion and support she once helped provide, Antonietta is a powerful reminder that community care is not one-sided. It is a circle.
