Celebrating the people behind home and community care
October is a time to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions of professionals in the home and community care sector.
In Nova Scotia, October is Continuing Care Month, as declared by the Health Association of Nova Scotia (HANS). The 2025 theme is “Standing alongside Nova Scotians, with compassion, comfort & care.” This campaign highlights the importance of the continuing care sector and raises awareness about the remarkable work of its employees and volunteers.
Those who work and volunteer in continuing care make a profound difference in the lives of people of all ages who need support in their homes and communities. They go above and beyond every day to meet the unique needs of their clients while ensuring the highest quality of care.
In Ontario, the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) marks October as Community Support Month. During this celebratory month, the OCSA holds its annual gathering, this year called CommunityConnect 2025, bringing together over 400 professionals from the home and community care sector and across healthcare.
The conference theme, “Shifting the balance: When upstream becomes mainstream,” explores how prevention and proactive care are reshaping the future of the health system, and how home and community care can lead that change. With dynamic speakers, practical sessions and space for collaboration, the focus is on leveraging the power of community-based care to create a healthier, more sustainable system.
For VON, these celebrations are an opportunity to recognize and thank the many caring and dedicated people who deliver care and community support services across both provinces. Whether it’s personal support, Meals on Wheels, transportation, caregiver support or hospice and palliative care, these professionals and volunteers make an extraordinary difference in the lives of those they serve, each and every day.
