Cheryl has lived with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a rare disease causing severe chronic pain and depression, since 2007. The condition forced her to step away from the workforce and, for many years, she felt misunderstood by the medical community, often experiencing feelings of hopelessness and isolation.
In April 2020, Cheryl was referred to the VON Chronic Pain Program. From her very first interaction with her nurse practitioner, she experienced a level of compassion, respect, and professionalism that immediately instilled a sense of safety and trust. Through weekly video consultations, Cheryl and her nurse worked together to set personal goals to manager her pain, and she also received counseling that helped her overcome the depression associated with her condition. This comprehensive support allowed her to regain confidence, work toward her goals, and ultimately become pain-free and regain her quality of life.
Cheryl is grateful to the VON and her nurse for their support and belief in her recovery. Passionate and committed, Cheryl contributes to shaping policies alongside the National Advisors Council, with the goal of enhancing the experiences of clients and families and promoting positive health outcomes.
