VON Mourns the Passing of Joy Saunders: A Remarkable Citizen & Philanthropist Remembered for Inspiring Acts of Kindness

VON mourns the loss of a special individual today, as the community bids farewell to a cherished citizen and friend to many. Joy Saunders leaves behind a legacy of profound impact on both our province and our country, particularly during the tumultuous spring of 2020, when she emerged as a beacon of light in the midst of darkness.

“Joy was a source of inspiration to our staff during one of the hardest times for our organization and for the entire province,” says Carol Curley, Associate Vice President, Home & Community Care, VON Nova Scotia. “We treasure the legacy she leaves us and send our collective condolences along to her family.”

Despite her modest self-description as a “very ordinary person,” Joy was inspired by the viral story of Captain (now Sir) Tom Moore, the 99-year-old UK resident whose backyard fundraising walks raised millions of pounds for the National Health Service during lockdown. At the age of 101, Joy's response was swift and determined: “I'm older than him, and I can walk farther... so I should do a fundraiser in my neighborhood!”

Her initiative couldn't have come at a more poignant time, following the tragic mass shooting in Nova Scotia. With a heavy heart, Joy, a dedicated volunteer for the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) for over 30 years, directed her efforts towards raising funds and awareness for the organization. In memory of two beloved VON workers, Heather O’Brien and Kristen Beaton, who lost their lives in April 2020, Joy embarked on her mission.

Establishing a challenging route measuring 0.8 km, complete with steep hills, Joy set out to walk it 102 times before her 102nd birthday in October. On September 12th of that year, surrounded by her six great-grandchildren, several of her eight children, and an outpouring of support from the community, Joy achieved her goal—nearly two months ahead of schedule. Her efforts raised over $80,000 for VON programs!

Joy's impact transcended mere monetary contributions. Countless members of the VON community attested to the hope and recognition she brought them during an incredibly stressful period. Furthermore, after a fall down her home stairs shortly after launching her campaign, Joy's setback inspired an extraordinary response. Communities across Canada and beyond rallied to continue her mission, sharing videos and heartfelt wishes on a Facebook page titled “Walking For Joy.”

In 2021, Joy Saunders received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in recognition of her exceptional volunteer contributions to VON. The medal was presented to her in a private ceremony on Friday, February 26th, outside her home in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Joy leaves behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, and boundless generosity. Her memory will forever inspire us to strive for a brighter, more compassionate world.

Joy Saunders passed away on April 12, 2024 at the age of 105.
