VON CCA is a champion on and off the field

Headshot of Kelly Goreham

Kelly Goreham has been a dedicated employee with VON’s Shelburne County home support services since 2019, serving as a Continuing Care Assistant (CCA). Over her five years with VON, Kelly has not only brought compassion and care to her role but has also achieved remarkable success in the world of sports.

From February 25 to March 4, 2024, Kelly had the opportunity to represent Nova Scotia at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary, Alberta, competing in floor hockey. Reflecting back, Kelly shares, “It was a wonderful experience just being there for the games and getting to see the city.” The highlight of her trip, however, was winning the gold medal. "Just playing floor hockey at that level was great, but winning gold made the experience much better," she says.

Kelly's journey with the Special Olympics began about 15 years ago when she was working in a workshop for people with disabilities. Since then, she has been a regular participant in both the Summer and Winter Games. A memorable moment in her Special Olympics journey was her first Winter Games in 2013, where she was almost hit by an opposing player but managed to get up and continue playing. This resilience and determination are qualities that Kelly brings to her work at VON every day.

Samantha Smith, Manager of Home and Community Care, praises Kelly's positive attitude and contribution to her team's success. “Kelly always has a smile and positive attitude at work, and I have no doubt that she was a big part in achieving her team’s gold medal,” Samantha says.

Kelly's colleagues at VON have been incredibly supportive, ensuring she had the necessary time for her practice outside of her work schedule. This support has been important in allowing Kelly to balance her professional responsibilities with her athletic pursuits.

Kelly has learned valuable lessons from her Special Olympics journey that she applies in her work at VON, particularly the importance of teamwork, collaboration and accommodating different abilities.

Initially motivated to participate in the Special Olympics to reach the national games, Kelly's goals have evolved. Now, she aims to compete internationally, demonstrating her commendable drive and passion. Kelly is proof that dedication and a positive attitude can lead to amazing achievements!
