Two expanded Adult Day Programs help to meet increased demand
VON’s Adult Day Programs (ADPs) provide social, recreational and therapeutic activities for seniors and individuals with disabilities, in a safe and supervised environment. For family caregivers, ADPs offer the opportunity for important daytime respite.
Our ADPs serve people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, as well as individuals with cognitive impairments, chronic illness or physical impairments.
Recently, we were able to expand two Ontario Adult Day Programs, helping to meet the increased demand for this life-enhancing service.
Cobourg ADP team celebrates expansion
The Cobourg, Ontario Adult Day Program team recently celebrated the site’s enlarged and refreshed space. Staff, volunteers, clients and community members joined together for an event to mark the expansion of the program and showcase the new space.
Thanks to an additional 1,200 sq. ft., the ADP space has almost doubled, providing for an enlarged kitchen, a second lounge and dining area, and two bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower, with grab bars and a bench.
Located at 700 D’Arcy Street, the ADP can now accommodate up to 45 clients each day, up from the previous 25. The space is leased from the Town of Cobourg.
Dorchester ADP grows to support more clients
A community partnership in Thames Centre, Ontario has resulted in an expanded ADP program in Dorchester.
In 2022, the Municipality of Thames Centre received a $1 million donation to expand the Lions Senior Centre, which resulted in a two-year project to expand the arena, creating a larger Senior Centre and increased VON space.
The VON community gathered to celebrate the grand opening on September 18, 2024.
“We’re pleased to be able to serve more clients, and to have the facilities in place to be able to provide the community with enhanced services, like overnight respite and community bathing programs,” says Kelly Maloney, Program Supervisor, Dorchester Adult Day Program.
The new VON office is doubled in size and provides for: a larger ADP that can accommodate an additional five clients per day; a secure ADP space, including an outdoor courtyard and two overnight respite rooms; the ability to provide community bathing; and program space to run community support services, including congregate dining events, blood pressure clinics and caregiver support.
