In time for holiday gifting: proceeds from new book to go to VON
Author Dr. Barbara Keddy, RN (ret), PhD, is generously donating the royalties from her new book, “Nightingale’s Vision: Nurses’ Voices from the 1920s and 1930s,” to VON.
Dr. Keddy, a former professor with Dalhousie University’s School of Nursing, wrote the book in memory of her aunt, Maude Grant, who was a VON nurse in the 1920s in both Kentville and Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
The book is based on oral histories she recorded 40 years ago, which are now housed in the Nova Scotia Archives. Dr. Keddy interviewed 40 nurses, in their eighties at the time, many of whom worked with VON later in their careers.
“These women were alive during two wars, the Great Depression, amid many pandemics, no antibiotics and horrifying working conditions, particularly during the ‘training’ years,” she says. “After graduation they couldn’t find work as RNs for a number of years and they were required to live in homes for room and board. The history of our profession has not been an easy one.”
Nightingale’s Vision, printed by New World Publishing, offers insight into the evolution of nursing in Canada and the respected profession it has become.
A perfect holiday gift for the nurse on your list!
VON is a registered charity, and proceeds from the book will help to boost important initiatives that bring more people in Nova Scotia the supports they need.
