Statement on the death of Arlene Reid, Personal Support Worker on April 27, 2020

It is with great sadness that we confirm that Arlene Reid passed away earlier this week. We understand from her family that her death is a result of complications stemming from COVID-19.

Arlene Reid was a Personal Support Worker (PSW) who worked on a part-time basis in VON’s GTA, Ontario branch for nearly three years. In speaking with her family and co-workers, I have been touched to hear about how much she loved her clients, and how much her clients loved her.

Ensuring that our employees, clients and their families remain safe and healthy is a critical priority for VON – not just during this pandemic, but at all times. Since implementing our clinical plans for pandemic in mid-January, we have had a strong focus on ensuring that increased precautions and practices are put in place to protect our employees and clients, and that these meet all necessary standards. All frontline employees, including nurses and PSWs, are provided with needed personal protective equipment and the training to do their jobs safely.

All of us at VON offer our deepest condolences to Arlene’s family and friends. We are saddened by the loss of one of our health care heroes.
