On the right track: how SMART volunteer Dave Dougherty keeps hearts and muscles strong in retirement

At 79 years young, Dave Dougherty is not your average retiree. After spending decades with CN Rail, he has found a new calling—empowering older adults through exercise. Now a dedicated volunteer with VON's SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together)® program, Dave’s story is one of transformation, purpose, and unwavering community spirit.

The SMART program is a seniors group exercise class, offered to community members 55 years and older, or any adult living with a disability who wants to improve their strength, balance and mobility through low-impact exercise.

Every week, Dave leads exercise sessions in retirement homes and his own condo building, where his classes are met with enthusiasm from the participants. As they walk in, the room fills with cheers and applause—a warm acknowledgment of the positivity and energy Dave brings to their lives. But the impact of his work reaches far beyond these joyful moments.

Dave’s dedication is rooted in both personal and financial generosity. Through the CN Railroaders in the Community program, Dave receives $15 per hour for each hour he volunteers with a non-profit, up to a maximum of $2,250 per year. He proudly donated the full amount to VON last year and is on track to do the same again this year—a testament to his commitment and love for the SMART program.

When asked about his most rewarding experience as a VON volunteer, Dave reflects with humility: "I love doing what I do for VON and the clients at the three retirement homes plus my condo. Being nominated for a VON Canada Award this year took me by surprise, and I am honoured to be considered."

But for Dave, it’s not the recognition that motivates him. It’s the deep sense of pride and fulfillment he feels when he sees the tangible progress his clients make. “There are clients who came into the classes in wheelchairs at first,” he recalls. “After a few months, they were able to come into class using a walker and were able to do most of the exercises. That really makes me proud to be there and able to help them.”

Dave’s influence extends beyond the physical. His sessions help foster a sense of community and camaraderie, with music from the 1940s and 50s playing in the background—a nostalgic and joyful touch that sparks memories and adds an extra layer of enjoyment for his clients. "The power of music helps the clients with their memory as well," he explains.

One particular memory that stands out to Dave captures the true essence of his impact: "There is one memory I really like,” he shares. “One of my clients used to play ball in her younger years. After we’re done exercising with the balls, most of the clients roll the balls back to me, but this one client waits. She stands up, holding onto her walker with one hand, and throws the ball to me to catch. It really makes her day."

Dave’s story is a heartwarming reminder that age is just a number, and the impact you have on others never retires. With every stretch, ball toss, and step he leads, Dave isn’t just helping his clients move their bodies—he’s lifting their spirits, brightening their days, and proving that kindness and dedication can make even the toughest workouts a joy.

As he continues his journey as a VON SMART leader, Dave shows us all that the secret to staying young is simple: keep moving, keep smiling, and never underestimate the magic of a little music and a lot of heart.
