Powered by compassion: A recap of VON Week 2026
This year’s VON Week brought staff, volunteers, and VON supporters together to honour and recognize the compassion and dedication of the VON team and its impact in communities we serve. Guided by this year’s theme, Powered by compassion, the opportunities to celebrate were plentiful and support was demonstrated in public illuminations across cities and towns in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
VON Week plans were largely supported by an internal working group, the VON Week Champions Network, comprised of staff in various in roles and regions from across the organization. The working group created new virtual events, such as Reiki sessions, VON trivia games, “eat and greet” opportunities, and planned in-person activities for staff working on-site. From singing karaoke, to posing as superheroes in team photos, contributing to a new VON playlist, and enjoying communal meals and treats together, lots of fun was had and compassion for one another, the work we do, and our clients, throughout VON during VON Week 2026. As part of the celebrations, VON held its third annual 50/50 raffles in Nova Scotia and Ontario to raise awareness and funds for VON programs and services that rely on donor support. Ontario winner, Mario T., took home $10,685. Mario purchased a ticket after hearing about the raffle from his wife, Lisa, who has been working for VON for over 36 years. Mario believes in supporting VON services and programs, as they enable vulnerable individuals to live safely and independently. “Because VON relies on charitable donations and community volunteers, the support from donors goes toward expanding the life-enhancing services,” he shared. He said he encourages others to purchase a VON 50/50 ticket in the future because it provides direct funding to community health and home care programs, and a 50% chance to win a substantial cash jackpot!
Nova Scotia winner, Harleen K., took home $3,485, which she said was an exciting surprise, but supporting VON was the real motivation. As an Activity Aide in Pictou’s Adult Day Program, Harleen sees firsthand how our programs and services help seniors and vulnerable individuals remain safe and well in their own homes and communities, while providing much needed support for families. She was at work with clients when she received the call that she’d won, and celebrated with her coworkers and clients, who were just as excited as she was.
Harleen encourages others to buy tickets in future raffles and that every ticket purchased helps make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. “Your ticket matters. Every purchase helps ensure that essential services are available. Even if you don’t have the winning ticket, your support can directly change a neighbor's life!”
VON thanks everyone who purchased 50/50 tickets for their generous support.
Next year, VON will be celebrating its 130th anniversary. Planning will soon be underway for an extra special VON Week 2027. Stay tuned for updates!
