Our second annual “NS Professional Development Days” roadshow was a success!

Group of VON staff at table

Four days in February and March provided four opportunities for VON service providers, Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) students and nursing students to learn with, from and about each other. These days allowed for professional development, clinical leadership, preceptor development and inter-professional collaboration and practice. Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union (NSNU) nurses were also able to earn points towards practice premiums.

These events would not be possible without the contribution of space from both Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and Cape Breton University (CBU).

Held at NSCC Stellarton, Truro and Kingstec campuses, as well as CBU, the days’ events gave attendees a chance to grow their skills and knowledge, with 25+ experts in a skills carousel showcasing several skills and simulation models. This year’s breakout seminars included “Wound Care” by a Health Association Nova Scotia (HANS) wound care consultant, “Responding to Behaviour that Makes you Feel Uncomfortable” and “Palliative Care: Symptom Management.”

VON is proud to hold these events to show our VON staff how much we value and appreciate them by giving them an opportunity to come together face to face for a day of learning and connection. The participants enjoyed networking with each other and our external partners in health care and meeting students who will be home and community care providers in the future. Many of our nurses also loved the chance to facilitate a table and provide teaching opportunities.

VON is grateful for the generosity of the Health Association of Nova Scotia in supporting these events. We would like to thank all our generous sponsors, external healthcare partners and vendors for enthusiastically participating in this event. A special thanks to those who contributed door prizes. And, a sincere thank-you to all of the VON nurses who shared their knowledge and experience by facilitating tables.
