Community Support Services Month and Continuing Care Month

October is a time to shine the spotlight on the incredible contributions of professionals in the home and community care sector, both in Nova Scotia and Ontario.

Community Support Month, as declared by the Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA), is an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness about the value of community support services (CSS) and honour the 20,000 employees and 100,000 volunteers who deliver essential home and community care services across Ontario, including VON. VON’s CSS services include nursing care and personal care, homemaking, Meals on Wheels, Adult Day Programs, transportation to medical appointments, caregiver support, and hospice and palliative care services. These services help clients to live independently in their homes and communities for as long as possible, and reduce the burden on family caregivers and other parts of the health care system.

Meanwhile in Nova Scotia, we are celebrating Community Care Month as declared by the Health Association of Nova Scotia (HANS). This year's theme is “Compassion in Action: Enriching the lives of Nova Scotians.” This month recognizes the contributions of Continuing Care Assistants (CCAs) who provide innovative personal and social support to our clients in their homes and contribute to the provision of high quality, safe, compassionate and efficient care to meet the needs of clients and families.

Both themes give VON an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many caring and dedicated people who work within our sector. It allows us to highlight the positive difference these dedicated professionals make in the lives of those that they support, each and every day.
