Motion is the Potion: VON staffer Desiree Welch's Journey to the Boston Marathon
Desiree Welch’s journey from casual runner to Boston Marathon finisher is an inspiring tale of dedication, resilience, and love for the sport.
Desiree, a Client Service Associate (CSA) for VON Middlesex Elgin, started running again in 2010 after a 20-year break, trying to keep fit and reduce stress. She had run competitively as a child, but the experience proved to be challenging; more often than not, she was paired with boys because of her height and ability.
Encouraged by a group of friends who were running enthusiasts, she rediscovered the sport in her thirties. She went for her first 5K run on the hottest day of summer and wrapped it up in only 35 minutes.
Desiree finished her first half marathon just a year later, and then set out to run a full marathon. With the help of a local running group, she trained and completed the Detroit Marathon in 2012, with a finishing time of 4 hours and 45 minutes. The process was arduous, but she experienced an internal shift that called on her to keep challenging herself.
Balancing marathon training with a busy work and personal life is no small feat. Desiree shares that sticking to the proper training schedule regardless of the circumstances is key. Rest and care following any injuries is also important, she notes.
Over time, Desiree took up cross-training, strength work, and meditation—all of which boosted her performance. She works on setting short, attainable goals that keep her motivated. And running with supportive friends makes her feel like part of a team.
On April 15, 2024, Desiree was one of the participants in the 128th Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual marathon and one of the best-known road racing events. Her VON team surprised her with a send-off party and created VON-themed bracelets for her to wear on the run.
“VON is not just a job. There’s definitely family here, and I cannot say enough how grateful I am for that,” Desiree says.
Desiree’s work at VON has provided a solid backdrop to her running pursuits. “My team was very supportive to me. They understand that running is what drives me and makes my soul roar,” she shares. She appreciates that her VON team supports the balance between work and personal life, and says the encouragement from her colleagues has been invaluable.
“Motion is the potion” is a guiding principle for Desiree, and she believes that physical activity in any form releases daily stress and adds to well-being.
For those considering their first marathon, Desiree offers sage advice: "Just start slow and work your endurance up gradually. Get a good training plan and stick by it." She also emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition and hydration and encourages runners to enjoy the journey and celebrate their progress.
Having completed one of the world’s most famous marathons, Desiree is far from finished. She looks forward to future races, with a goal to run faster and achieve new personal bests.
