Since retiring, VON Meals on Wheels (MOW) volunteer Kersi (pictured) enjoys the opportunity to do meaningful work that keeps him busy and makes lives better at the same time.

“It gives me a sense of pride to help somebody else who is not able to help themselves,” he says. “Sometimes it's cold or rainy, but there are people who are relying on you to come and give them a meal. For some of them, it’s their only meal of the day.”

Kersi is a volunteer MOW driver on Tuesdays and Fridays. He greatly enjoys meeting new people and getting to see new places in his community. “I get to spend time outside,” he adds. “Otherwise I would be sitting and watching TV, which I don’t want to do during the day.”

The clients appreciate him, and there are lots of seniors in his community depending on him to bring them a meal.

“It doesn’t take much time,” Kersi says. “It’s about three to four hours. I go to the depot and I also help them to put the meals into the bags.”

Through its simple yet profound mission of delivering meals, Meals on Wheels nourishes spirits and helps clients to live with dignity and improved health in their own homes for longer than they might otherwise be able.

Through his dedication and compassion, Kersi embodies the true spirit of volunteerism, illuminating the path towards a brighter future. Kersi is also a dedicated ambassador for VON, appearing in this video to help recruit more volunteers: https://youtu.be/o2G005Q0qes
