March for Meals: Celebrating accessible nutrition and community care

Each March, VON joins Meals on Wheels providers across Ontario in recognizing the importance of Meals on Wheels programs, the dedicated volunteers who make them possible, and the necessary supports provided to seniors and individuals who may otherwise struggle to access proper nutrition.

VON's Meals on Wheels: Recent highlights

VON Canada continuously strives to expand and enhance its programs to better serve the diverse needs of the communities we support. In 2023, VON launched a pilot program in the Mississauga area to provide culturally appropriate meal options, ensuring that clients could receive meals that catered to their individual preferences, tastes, and dietary needs.

Thanks to the success of this pilot, VON recently received base funding to continue and expand this initiative. As this program ramps up, more culturally appropriate meal options will be offered to clients in the area.

In addition, VON Hamilton recently partnered with Nucleus Independent Living (Central Registry) to offer meals at a significantly reduced cost for clients in need of subsidies. Nucleus has sponsored 20 clients, helping VON to provide them with two meals per day at just $2 per meal.

“Through this partnership, we are able to help clients access the nutritious meals they need to support their health and well-being,” says Krista Law, Manager, Home & Community Care, Community Support Services, Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant. “We are grateful for all of the community partners who support us in delivering affordable, nourishing meals to clients right in their own homes.”

In Nova Scotia, VON delivers approximately 60,000 meals per month, primarily frozen meals with some hot options. These meals are provided in partnership with Nova Scotia Health’s Continuing Care. In addition to delivering nutritious meals, VON staff have the opportunity to check in on clients during delivery. One family member shared, “I love that they always call when they can’t reach mom—it makes me feel like someone is looking out for her when I can’t be there in person.”

Volunteers: The heartbeat of Meals on Wheels

Volunteers are a vital part of VON’s Meals on Wheels program, helping to deliver meals and providing important safety checks for isolated clients.

“Meals on Wheels goes beyond food delivery. It’s a lifeline for those facing isolation,” says Danielle Todd, Director of Home and Community Care. “Our Meals on Wheels program helps seniors and individuals with mobility challenges stay independent and engaged in their communities.”

While VON receives funding to cover the costs of meals, the program relies on volunteers to help deliver meals to clients in their homes.

VON Canada is always looking for passionate volunteers to help with meal delivery, preparation, and client interaction. Volunteers play a key role in ensuring those in need stay nourished and connected. To learn more about how to become a volunteer, please visit von.ca/volunteer today.
