Driving for a cause in Nova Scotia

VON Volunteer in front of VON sign

One volunteer driver with VON’s transportation program in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia has discovered unexpected fulfilment behind the wheel. What began as a desire to stay active has evolved into a source of joy and purpose.

“This has been so great for me to stay busy, and I never would have guessed it would be so much fun,” says volunteer Basil Oickle, who drives VON clients three to five times a week. “I found a niche that makes me happy and something to look forward to each day.”

For Basil, a VON volunteer since June of 2023, the role has been an opportunity to connect with people in his community and make a difference in their lives.

Kathy Thomas, Community Support Services Manager, VON Lunenburg, says Basil has been a great find for the area’s transportation program. “He’s willing to help out if needed, he’s friendly and quickly responds with a yes most of the time even on short notice,” she says.

Basil also keeps staff posted on how the drives went and how the clients and he both enjoyed the drive. “His service has allowed us to be able to fulfill client transportation requests, especially long-distance drives for medical appointments, as we have a limited number of volunteers who do long-distance drives,” Kathy explains.

Basil reached out to the VON team to say, “I just wanted to let you know that I am very thankful and appreciative that you entrusted my abilities. I am very grateful, and for that I thank you and the team at VON! God certainly is good to me.”

Basil also noted that he’s very glad he answered the call on Facebook for volunteer drivers. Do you have spare time and want to make an impact, like Basil? Fill out a volunteer form today! https://von.ca/en/volunteer
