26th annual Activity Challenge raises 30K for VON Middlesex-Elgin programs

On September 27, 2025, the sun was shining at Mount Brydges Lions Park as community participants, VON staff members, clients, volunteers and supporters gathered for the 2025 VON Activity Challenge in person and virtually.
The event brought together participants of all ages to celebrate movement, community and the vital programs and services VON Middlesex-Elgin offers.
The day consisted of VON’s largest outdoor SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together)® exercise class of the year, led by instructors who had the crowd stretching, stepping and smiling together. Beyond the class, families enjoyed a trail walk, scavenger hunt, yard games hosted by VON Family Supports and a community barbecue provided by the Mount Brydges Lions Club.
This year’s Activity Challenge raised over $30,000 through pledges and sponsorships—surpassing last year’s total. These funds will directly support local VON Middlesex-Elgin programs and services such as SMART® exercise classes, Meals on Wheels, client transportation, Family Supports and so much more.
For Fund Development Coordinator Noel Sterne, the event reflects both VON’s mission and the power of community spirit. “The Activity Challenge is a way for us to get outside and enjoy activities like walking, exploring and just simple movements,” Noel said. “It’s about keeping ourselves active while encouraging others to do the same—all while getting the word out about who VON is and what we do in the communities we serve.”
A special moment of the day was the presentation of the Donna Patterson Award, recognizing a member of the VON family that makes a real difference in the lives of others. This year’s recipient, Jim Balicsak, was honoured for his commitment as a VON driver, community volunteer, and key supporter of the Activity Challenge.
“Events like this don’t happen without the community getting on board,” said Noel. “From our amazing volunteers and VON staff to local partners, it’s truly a team effort. We’re so grateful for everyone who participated, sponsored or volunteered.”
The VON Activity Challenge emphasizes what can be achieved when a community comes together—the impact is felt well beyond the event.
Noel is hoping to grow that spirit even further: “I’m looking forward to even more people participating and to building on this momentum from 2025 into 2026. Together, we’re making a difference.”
