Katrina Borland has worked for VON for 12 years, and says the supportive environment has kept her with the team even through a difficult life event.

Katrina was happy in her role as a personal support worker (PSW) with the Assisted Living team when a sudden health challenge made the job impossible for her. “I woke up with what I thought was a pinched nerve and ended up having cervical spinal surgery the next morning,” she explains.

She was unable to work for over eight months, and for a time wasn’t sure she would be able to go back at all. Once she was ready, though, she was welcomed back as a client service associate (CSA).

“I was lucky enough to transition into a position within our Owen Sound office where I was supported to step out of my comfort zone and learn an entirely new job, all while being able to continue to be part of our VON family,” says Katrina. “There was something really good about coming back to that comfort level and familiarity.”

She is now an administrative assistant and front desk receptionist, a position that allows her to interact with clients in person once again. The Owen Sound office includes a nursing clinic, for which Katrina is the screener and scheduler.

Although she would gladly return to her job as a PSW if she could, Katrina appreciates that her role combines office and client work. “It’s a good mix. I’m that first face clients see when they come into the office,” she says. “You put your best foot forward to be welcoming and accommodating.”

She is grateful for the opportunities VON has provided in the past 12 years. “It’s a completely supportive environment,” she says. “And it’s a great place to learn.”
