The Safe Medicines
for Seniors: A Workshop for Caregivers package is a tool kit
to help service providers promote the safe use of medicine to caregivers
of seniors.
The Canadian Association for Community Care, in partnership with the
Canadian Pharmacists
Association and the Victorian
Order of Nurses, developed the workshop tools through pilot testing
and focus groups with caregivers of seniors.
With a new partner, the Canadian Healthcare
Association, the Project will conduct regional training sessions across
Canada to train service providers on how to deliver the "Safe Medicines
for Seniors" curriculum. These trained facilitators are now conducting workshops with caregivers in their own communities.
The foundation of the "Safe Medicines for Seniors" curriculum
is based on an earlier version of the workshop on appropriate medication
use for caregivers of seniors, developed with support from Health Canada,
Pfizer Canada, Merck Frosst, and Janssen Ortho. The original workshop,
which has been adapted for the Safe Use Project, was pilot-tested in several
sites across Canada and delivered successfully to caregivers across Nova
Scotia with the support of Caregivers Nova Scotia.
