Diabetes Education Program

This program helps people recognize the signs and symptoms to determine if they, or someone they know, might have diabetes. Education on diabetes management is offered in a relaxed setting, and offers information on the treatment and management of diabetes, including how it's treated, meal planning, the importance of exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, and preventing possible complications.

VON's retirement- planning seminars aim to lessen anxiety and encourage positive attitudes towards aging and retirement.

Reflexology

In this complementary therapy, a reflexologist (an unregulated health worker) applies pressure to reflex points in the head, feet and hands to improve circulation, relieve tension and reduce stress. It can be done at home or in a clinic.

Safe Kid Program

The VON nurse-facilitator uses story telling, role playing, active games and films to teach children how to deal with strangers and what to do about sexual abuse. The program is offered in day care centres, nursery schools and kindergarten classrooms.

Seniors Health Counselling

Seniors typically represent 80 per cent of a VON branch's total clientele. These classes, led by VON nurses at community centres, seniors' housing and clinics focus on normal aspects of aging and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The nurse can also spot early signs of new health problems and take action to prevent acute illness.

Smoking Cessation Program

Offering support and information for people who want to quit smoking, this program includes advice on preparing for all the challenges quitting involves, from cravings and weight gain to coping with relapse.

Therapeutic Touch

In therapeutic touch, trained (but unregulated) practitioners use their hands to direct energy from themselves to patients. The theory is the patient's own energy can be detected and manipulated by the therapist to speed healing. Therapeutic touch is usually offered in concert with other treatments and can be done at home or in a clinic.

Wellness and Health-Promotion Clinics

Held in public places such as pharmacies or community events, VON Wellness and Health Promotion clinics offer clients screening tests and assessment of cholesterol, blood pressure, body-mass index and other indicators of potential health problems. Individual counselling focuses on education and raising awareness on topics such as heart health, diabetes, asthma, allergies and osteoporosis.

Workplace Wellness Clinics

Offered either as half-day or "lunch and learn" sessions, these clinics take screening, counselling and health education to the workplace. They can be tailored to the health need of organizations, and include topics such as smoking cessation, women's health, stress management, healthy eating and physical activity.
