Handbags for Hospice ~ the Power of the Purse, which was held Friday, January 21, 2011, was an overwhelming success! Leslie Farrell, owner of Tim Hortons on Norwich Ave. in Woodstock was the event Chairperson and Organizer. She learned of a similar event taking place in Windsor, ON over a year ago and approached VON Oxford about hosting a purse auction fundraiser for VON Sakura House.

Initial plans were to host a group of about 200 women at the first annual event with the goal of raising $20,000 for Sakura House. The idea spread excitedly by word-of-mouth and the event grew to a guest list of almost 500! On January 21, women were treated to a decadent evening which included a desert buffet and candy bar, mystery raffle, purses of all description on the live and silent auction tables. They were greeted by local firefighters in their dress uniforms and served a complimentary champagne cocktail.
The planning committe, known as the Bag Ladies of Oxford, tried to think of every detail to delight their guests and it showed -- feedback about the fundraiser has been incredibly positive. And the power was definately in the purse -- the event, in it's inaugural year raised $41,000 for VON Sakura House!
Thanks go out to the Bag Ladies of Oxford for all their hard work and commitment and to our event sponsors, supporters and volunteers.
